Emerging and Reemerging Diseases of Zoonotic and Non zoonotic Diseases

Founded in 2024 in Puntland, Somalia, the One Health Consortium has become the largest and most dynamic civil society platform focusing on climate change, animal, human, and plant health, as well as sustainable development. It boasts a membership exceeding 2,000 organizations and networks Globally. For that blueprint reason, One Health Consortium aims to ‘’educate’ and ‘establish’’ networks to enhance health outcomes and well-being across humans, animals, and plants, to promote environmental resilience through a collaborative, Global, and One Health approach.

The initiative began with concerned professionals gathering at a panel discussion, alarmed by Somalia's absence in the international One Health Consortium dialogue concerning animal, human, plant, and environmental health. The New Partnership for Universities in Somalia convened a workshop to foster dialogue among African civil society organizations, aiming to collaborate effectively in shaping discussions post-2024 on the One Health Consortium. This journey marked the formation of the Somalia Universities and Civil Societies, aiming to unify Somalia's civil society voice.

We live in a globally interconnected world where the One Health concept promotes interdisciplinary collaborations, communication, and coordination across human, animal, Plant, and environmental health sectors globally. Over more than a decade, OH researchers have tackled critical global health issues such as COVID-19, Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), Zoonotic diseases, Vector-borne diseases, climate change, Food safety and security, biodiversity protection, and the impact of human diets on planetary health. This approach aims to synergize efforts, accelerate biomedical research, improve public health effectiveness, expand scientific knowledge, and enhance medical education and clinical care. Proper implementation of One Health is expected to safeguard and improve the health of current and future generations, potentially saving countless lives. Regarding that one health is an integrative approach to human, animal, plant, environmental, and ecosystem health in ways that improve, protect, and defend the health of all species.

At One Health Consortium (OH), we emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration as essential for addressing global challenges. Our researchers and strategic plan with integrate expertise spanning economics, epidemiology, disease modeling, and risk analysis, based on Humans, and Animal and their sharing environment to conduct impactful, policy-focused research that will be OHC-oriented.

OHC operates offices in key Somali cities such as Garowe, Kismayo, Bossaso, and Galkayo, with researchers located across Africa and Asia, exclusively in Somalia. Our projects result in policy recommendations and are published in top scientific journals. We excel in addressing local, regional, and global challenges with innovative research design and analysis, effectively communicating our findings to a wide range of stakeholders.
